Florida Federal Courts
Just like the federal courts in both Georgia and Alabama, the federal courts in Florida are divided into three federal Districts, the Northern District, the Middle District and the Southern District.
The United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida is based in Tallahassee. This District covers a large area, from the federal courthouse in Gainesville all the way to the federal courthouse in Pensacola. A fourth federal courthouse is located in Panama City.
The United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida also covers a large area. Federal cases are handled in courthouses in Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, Tampa, and Ft. Meyers.
Finally, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida is based in Miami. This District also has courthouses in Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Pierce, West Palm Beach and Key West.
Just as is the case with the federal courts in Georgia and Alabama, there are both similarities and differences among the three federal districts in Florida. On the one hand, each District is both urban and rural. The Northern District has some larger cities (like Tallahassee and Pensacola) but also has very unpopulated regions. The Middle District has the cities of Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville, but additionally has large regions where agriculture and ranching are the principal activities (not to mention tourism). Finally, the Southern District includes Miami and all that goes with being a major international financial center and tourist destination. The Southern District is such a busy federal court that there are multiple federal courthouses, often separated by only a few miles. However, the Southern District also includes the Florida Keys, and therefore includes a smattering of unusual cases that arise from a far-flung set of islands at the southernmost point in the contiguous United States.
While there some regional differences between the three Florida federal Districts, the rules and the law is the same in each location. Because we are very familiar with federal law, we are quite comfortable handling matters in any of the Florida federal courts. Also, any appeal from a case arising in a Florida federal District Court automatically goes to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. That appellate court is located a few blocks from our Atlanta offices. We handle many federal appeals, and therefore have deep experience with appeals that arise from any of the three Florida federal District Courts.
